1957-05-13 Chesapeake Bay, near Delaware Canal, Delaware: Aircraft hit a floating log during landing on water and sank. Pilot/owner escaped with minor injuries.

Teacher Rescued in Plane Crash

GLEN RIDDLE — William A. Morgan, 34, of' Chestnut av., heading home yesterday in an amphibian plane just bought at Norfolk, Va., made it but the plane didn't.
Morgan's unexpected itinerary included some scratches and bruises, a dunking and swim in the Chesapeake and the Delaware Canal and a rescue by a tug.
Industrial arts teacher at Springfield High School and a veteran flier, Morgan decided to land at Delaware City on his way to Delaware County Airport. His CB Republic plane hit a log in the water, "just collapsed" and nosed over. It was 4:30 p.m.
The crew of the tug Bristol, accompanied by a dredge of the American Dredging Co., spotted the capsized plane near the mouth of the canal and picked up Morgan who was hanging to its side.

PLANE SINKS
The Escort, Corps of Engineers vessel which patrols the canal, picked up Morgan and towed the plane to near the Reedy Point bridge where it sank. Only the tail of the plane remained above water.
Morgan, who learned to fly in the Navy during World War II and who has more than 2,000 hours in the air, had bought the plane for his own use. He is the son of William Morgan, Springfield magistrate.
Today he planned to have his minor injuries checked and then visit the scene of the crash to determine the extent of the damage to his plane.
