2 DIE, 2 HURT IN PLANE CRASH

Norman W. Porteous, a Seattle boat engineer, was injured, two companions were killed and a fourth man was hurt when a plan crashed yesterday afternoon soon after taking off from the Grand Forks, B. C., Airport.
Arthur N. Hilsen, veteran Spokane commercial pilot, and Lester Farrish, a lumberman from Lincoln, Lincoln County, were killed, the Associated Press reported. J. R. McDonald of Inchelium, Ferry County, an employee of Farrish, was injured.
Porteous, 29 years old, and McDonald were hospitalized at Grand Forks.  Porteous suffered fractures of both arms, jaw and ribs.  He was reported in improved conditions today.
The three men were being flown by Hilsen to the Okanogan Valley in British Columbia on a fishing trip.  The plane had cleared customs at the Grand Forks airport and had traveled about a mile when it suddenly shot downward and struck a tree.
Proteous, who is married and lives at 9008 17th Av. N. E., is associated with his father, Norman, in the firm Proteous & Co.
Farrish, 41 years old, a Washington State College graduate, was general manager of the Lincoln Lumber Company and part owner of the Western Pine Manufacturing Company.
