1998-11-23 Cancelled from Norwegian CAR.

Remarks:

On Saturday 11 July 1998 at 16:45 hrs, there was an accident in Geirangerfjorden, in the harbour just outside Geiranger, with a Cessna U206G, LN-DBZ. The accident occurred during landing on the water, after a sightseeing trip with German tourists over the Geirangerfjord area. During the landing phase the aircraft hit the water in such a way that it bounced up again. At the second impact with the surface, the left float cut its way into the water, making the aircraft nose over, ending up inverted in the water and kept afloat by it's floats. The Commander managed to get out through the left side window with minor injuries. He made several attempts to rescue his four passengers, but did not succeed. The four passengers did not survive the accident. The AAIB/N concludes that an unfortunate, and for the Commander totally unexpected, wave situation in the landing area was the main causal factor for the accident.

Remarks: Fatal accident 2003-05-04
The owner of the aircraft wanted to return the aircraft from winter storage at Notodden airport and
fly it back to Kilen flying club at Lilløykilen in the Oslo fjord. The duration of the flight was estimated to 30 minutes. The aircraft, a Cessna 180H on floats, was reported missing when it had not reached its destination after 1 hour.

The aircraft was located severely damaged on the top of mountain Slettefjell west of Notodden. This was in the opposite direction from Notodden than the intended flight. The pilot, who was the only on onboard, was fatally injured.

The aircraft was flying on course 290º when it hit the terrain with an angel of approximately 30-50º. The collision with the terrain is considered to be of non survivable nature. It was not found any medical factors that could affect the pilot’s ability to fly the aircraft.

It is the opinion of the AIBN that the accident happened after the pilot lost control of the aircraft due to vertigo after flying VFR in to instrument conditions (IMC). Contributing factors have been limited knowledge of the terrain along intended flight path, long time since last flight and limited variation in pilot experience.

Floats: EDO 2870.

Remarks:

One G-21A was acquired by the Swedish Air Force in 1951 and based at Wing F 21 at Kallax close to Luleå as a flying ambulance. It got the designation Tp 81 and the SwAF/n 81001. The formal reason for the purchase was that the ordinary ambulance aircraft Tp 4 Beech 18R was to take part of an Antarctic expedition. The Tp 81 had once been built for the US Navy (designation JRF-2) with c/n 1134. As a part of the Lend-Lease Agreement, it was transferred to the RAF, where it first was registered as BW787 and later as FP484. After the war, it was sold to a civil company in USA where it carried the registration NC9293H, and later to Norway (LN-SAB).

The Tp 81 was according to the regulations of 1947 painted all orange and - besides the common roundels of the Air Force - fitted with Red Cross markings.

The flying ambulance service was more and more taken over by private enterprises. After ten years of service, the Tp 81 instead was used for transports and liaison missions.  In 1962, the ”Goose” crashed at a take-off from the airfield at Hemavan and had to be written off. The crew got away with only minor injuries.

The Tp 81 was powered with two
