1953-07-12 Gawley's Park, Near Midland, Ontario: Crashed on a local beach after loosing height after take off from water near Midland.   The pilot, Lloyd Atkinson (YZP-3729), and his two sons Dougie (4) and Tommy (7), and neighbor boy Ricky Mohan (8) escaped with minor injuries.  32 year old fifth passenger Fred Thompson suffered a fractured pelvis and was taken to hospital.  The Seabee was scrapped after this accident.

"During the process of a take off, and after becoming airborne, aircraft probably stalled because of the inexperience of the pilot and landed heavily on the beach".

Loyd Atkinson's Report 1953-07-14:

I taxied the aircraft downwind from the beach for approximately one mile. With me in the aircraft were my two sons, Tommy aged 7, and Dougie aged 4, Ricky Mohan aged 8, a neighbor's son who were in the back seats and Mr. Fred Thompson a friend from Barrie beside me in the front. The aircraft fuel tank contained approximately 30 gals. of gas. I let the aircraft weathercock into what little wind there was, did my cockpit check and set for take-off. Reaching an indicated airspeed of between 65 and 70, the aircraft became airborne. I climbed normally to 60 feet, then buffeted slightly and then continued to climb normally once again. At 100 feet or over, it buffeted again and lost altitude. We regained altitude of 150 feet only to be caught in what seemed to be a downdraft between land and water. Realizing I couldn't clear the trees, I did a flat turn, keeping the nose down to prevent a wing stall. Losing altitude quickly, I belly landed the aircraft on the beach. No-one in the aircraft or on the beach were injured beyond bruises and scratches. Mr. Thompson was in St. Andrew's Hospital attended by Dr. Churchill Swan of Midland, two days awaiting X-ray of his pelvis and recovering from a slight shock. The X-ray showed no broken bones. He is now released from hospital. The children were bruised but not seriously hurt. The aircraft is beyond repair.

1953-07-22 Deleted from Canadian Civil Aircraft Register.
